The fundamental fact of existence is that this trust in God, this faith, is the firm foundation under everything that makes life worth living. It’s our handle on what we can’t see. The act of faith is what distinguished our ancestors, set them above the crowd. 3 By faith, we see the world called into existence by God’s word, what we see created by what we don’t see.”
I am so glad and delighted to dialogue with you all this day about faith. This is a word we use often in discussion but maybe not as often in our day to day living. So today I hope we can make faith more of a daily practice. When I was in undergrad at Grand Valley, I was in A LOT of student organizations. One of the organizations I was in required its new members to do an exercise called a trust walk. What the activity entailed was the new member being blind folded and taken on a walk by an old member. (Believe me it’s not as dangerous as it sounds!) The point of the activity was for members to build a trusting relationship with one another and to build faith in each other. The older member was responsible for guiding the new member through whatever path they chose to take them on. So not only could the newer member not physically see where they were going, they didn’t even know what path they were on. The new members didn’t know if the next step would be smooth pavement, rocky gravel, sticky mud or soft grass; all they could do was trust that their guide had their best interest in mind and wanted them to make it through. They had to trust that though they couldn’t fully see or understand the path that they were on, that the older members had perfectly clear vision, knew the path well and had been on it before themselves. And that my friend is exactly what life in faith is; a trust walk with God. As humans, and humans in America we are so obsessed with control and knowing the next step and constantly having plans and playing life as safely as possible. However, the down side to that as Christians is that we are supposed to be living spirit- led lives and when we seek to know everything we take on the role of God. It is NOT our job to know everything, to see our entire future and how everything will play out will never leave us nor forsake us and that all things work together for our good and God’s glory. Sounds simple right? The trick is actually letting go and having enough faith to let God take over your life. When you feel lost, afraid, intimidated or worried just keep your eyes on God, know that life is a trust walk or in our case a faith walk, and just indeed walk by faith.
God, we know that You are in control. We know that nobody knows us better than You. You created us in our mother’s womb and knew our names before our parents even knew each other. Lord, help us to have faith, to be a faithful people and to learn how to let go. God, letting go isn’t easy but we know that surrender to You is truly an act of elevation. So help us to let go today God. Help us to let go of fear, worry and doubt. Help us to let go of people, places and things that don’t nurture our faith. And in letting go, God help us to get to know You better. Help us Lord to walk by faith.
*Today, God is calling us all to live fully for Him, to give up control and to have faith in God. Take time to prepare to pray in your own way, and see how God speaks to you about faith today.
It only takes a mustard seed...*
